National Statistic and Information Authority

National Statistic and Information Authority, as an independent statistical organization; works to create a single scientific data registration system, cohesion of statistical and geographical information, civil registration and development of information systems in Afghanistan.

National Statistics and Information Authority, formerly known as the Central Statistics Organization, was established in 1972 as an independent authority within the government of Afghanistan in order to establish a coordination mechanism for managing statistical information within all sectors in the country.

Through 1973-1978, NSIA extended establishing offices in other provinces of the country. In 1991, NSIA was promoted from Central Statistics Organization to a ministry. However, this lasted only for one year.

NSIA has accomplished many important tasks since its establishment, mainly conducting the first nationwide census in Afghanistan whose initial phase began between 1975- 1978 and completed in 1979. In addition, NSIA has conducted many other activities which include implementing sample surveys and collecting different data in the country.

After the establishment of interim administration in 2002, the Central Statistics Organization resumed its usual activities which included implementing surveys and collecting different data. In 2018, based on requirement observed by the Islamic Government of Afghanistan, besides the Deputy Director General Office for Professional Affairs and Deputy Director General Office for Finance and Administration in the structure of NSIA, the Deputy Director General office for Geo Spatial Information management and the Office of Deputy Director General for Management and Development of Information Systems were added into the NSIA structure. Hence, the name of Central Statistics Organization was changed to National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA).

In late 2018, based on a decree by the President Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, H.E. Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, the Afghanistan Central Civil Registration Authority merged with NSIA which now serves as a General Directorate for Civil Registration under the structure of NSIA.

The Deputy Director General Office for Professional Affairs is responsible for strengthening and standardizing of the statistical system, developing and improving statistical initiatives for producing and presenting quality data in various economic and social fields.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Director General Office for Geo Spatial Information management collects, stores and manages geographical information of the country. Collection of the information takes place at national level utilizing most up to date technology such as the remote sensing and the Geographical Information System (GIS).

The Office of Deputy Director General for Management and Development of Information Systems within NSIA collects information and data using the most modern technological tools and conducts surveys in the very remote areas and enters data into the unified information data bank. The office also strives to manages and develop information systems at national level.

The General Directorate of Civil Registration which recently merged with NSIA is the only authority for registering civil and vital information of the citizens in the country. The directorate presents valuable services to citizens, so that they play a constructive role in bringing positive change and good governance in the country.

The Deputy Director General Office for Finance and Administrative Affairs is responsible for human resources issues, services, procurement and finance matter within NSIA. The administrative structure of NSIA include 27 directorates in Capital and has active branch offices in all provinces. All statistical and information services provided by NSIA are fact based and accurate which have vital impacts on policies, planning and decision making at national level.

NSIA, while having a vision of creating a responsive and sustainable statistical system, is functioning in the country to establish a unified statistical data entry system and to ensure coordination of all statistics related activities.

NSIA as a prime national entity is committed to providing timely and quality services to public and national and international organizations.
